Lidl to build 3000 homes in fresh residential drive

Supermarket chain Lidl has unveiled plans to lead the development over 3,000 homes and a school as it looks to secure planning consent for new stores around the capital.

The discount retailer, which has previously built 335 homes in the UK, is looking to ramp up its involvement in mixed-use schemes including office space, hotels, apartments and student accommodation.

One of its new developments is Deer Park primary school, in London’s Richmond borough. The school, due for completion in 2019, will occupy two floors above a Lidl store and include an outdoor playground.

Of the new homes, Lidl is understood to be building some itself while the rest form part of projects led by other developers. In line with the German firm’s money-saving brand, the focus will be on affordable homes rather than luxury properties.

UK managing director Christian Härtnagel said in a statement: “We’re proud that our stores are increasingly helping to pave the way for mixed-use developments, which in turn are supporting important initiatives.

“It continues to mean a great deal to us that we are able to support many of the communities that we’re a part of by providing added value above and beyond affordable food.”

According to a report in The Guardian, property experts believe the residential drive is likely fuelled by difficulties gaining planning permission for new shops in London.

The chain intends to open at least 50 stores a year around the country. Promising to build flats and facilities like schools can help to persuade councils to give the planning greenlight.
