River Island confirmed for huge new retail destination in Leeds

River Island has secured space at the retail and leisure scheme opening at Thorpe Park Leeds later this year.

The fashion retailer will launch a 6,500 sq ft store at the 350,000 sq ft development, which will also boast a Next, TK Maxx, Outfit, Boots, Odeon and Pure Gym.

Further names are due to be announced in the coming months, ahead of the full opening in October.

News of the signing has coincided with the unveiling of the development’s brand identity; it will be known as ‘The Springs’, in reference to the freshwater springs that once flowed from the site.

Birmingham-based digital agency Core Marketing created the brand for real estate developer Scarborough International Properties Limited (SIPL), which is delivering The Springs alongside joint venture partner Legal & General.

SIPL’s joint chief exec, Simon Marshall, said: “We are really starting to see momentum build for the retail and leisure offer at Thorpe Park Leeds.

“The process of handing over to occupiers for fit out in advance of the grand opening in October is now in full flow.”

He continued: “As a business destination, Thorpe Park Leeds has enjoyed tremendous success with over 60 blue chip occupiers employing over 4,500 people already on site.

“The launch of a new retail and leisure destination at the heart of the development, as a major part of a £162m phase two investment, is a real game changer for East Leeds.”

Speaking further, Mr Marshall said: “Now that we’ve announced the new brand identity, we have reached yet another important milestone in the development of a more upbeat, fresh and engaging development that will appeal to a broader consumer audience.”

The head of urban regeneration at Legal & General Capital, Rachel Dickie, commented: “Thorpe Park Leeds is establishing itself as a true destination where people can, live, work and play.

“This milestone of a new retail and leisure offer further brings to life this unique and progressive mixed-use community that we have created in partnership with Scarborough International Properties, and the ongoing support of the council, and will contribute hugely to the economic prosperity of the local area, creating new homes, jobs and amenities.”

The £162m phase two investment at Thorpe Park Leeds, struck in 2015 with Legal & General Capital, includes the 350,000 sq ft Springs scheme, 900,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, 300 new Redrow homes, a 113-acre public park with sports facilities and the first section of the East Leeds Orbital Road project.
