North East lags behind every other English region for new home registrations
The North East saw far fewer homes registered to be built this summer than in other parts of England, new figures have shown.
According to data from the National House Building Council, 1,476 new homes were registered in the region between May and July 2018, down from 1,765 the year previous.
Every other region of England saw more registrations.
To compare, Yorkshire & the Humber had the second fewest registrations at 2,959 – just over double the number registered in the North East.
The South East topped the table with 6,879 homes registered, followed by London (5,289), Eastern England (4,866), North West and Merseyside (4,260), South West (4,232), West Midlands (3,859) and East Midlands (3,146).
Over 15,800 new homes were registered to be built in July across the whole of the UK, representing a 35% increase on July 2017.
Of that figure, 12,087 were in the private sector (compared to 8,421 in 2017) and 3,782 were affordable homes (3,362 in 2017).
