North East solicitors continues to grow
NEW appointments at a leading North East firm of solicitors means the company now has the largest independent Court of Protection department in the North East.
EMG Solicitors, based at Abbeywoods Business Park, Durham, has added to its ever-growing team of experts with the recruitment of two new staff.
And the news coincides with the awarding of mental health and community care contracts from the Legal Aid Agency.
Mandy Cheung has joined EMG’s health and welfare department, working in the Court of Protection (COP) sector following time employed by local authorities in the adults and children’s services department.
Mandy has been joined by experienced legal assistant, Nahdia Bloundele, who has taken up the new role of COP administrator.
The practice, which was set up in 2014 by solicitor Emma Gaudern, operates across a range of sectors but has always had a nationally respected reputation for its COP work.
The Court of Protection becomes involved when someone is unable to make decisions on their own behalf and the court appoints a solicitor to manage that person’s property and affairs, along with making decisions for their personal health and welfare.
EMG Solicitors now has a dedicated team of ten involved in Court of Protection work.
Jemma Morland, Director and Head of Court of Protection at EMG Solicitors, said she was delighted to welcome the new members of the team.
“Since day one we have always specialised in Court of Protection and we are now nationally recognised for our knowledge in this area,” said Jemma.
“The addition of Mandy and Nahdia will be a huge asset as we continue to grow.”
The range of work that the team can undertake continues to broaden, with the start of the contracts with the Legal Aid Agency.
This means that EMG can represent those who are deprived of their liberty under the Mental Capacity Act, along with being able to advise about other health and welfare matters relating to those who lack the mental capacity to make those decisions for themselves such as where they live, the care they receive and who they have contact with.
At the same time EMG Solicitors can also advise and represent clients in matters relating to detention under the Mental Health Act.
EMG Solicitors now has more than 30 staff and operates across a wide range of sectors including health and welfare, residential conveyancing, commercial property, family law and will, trusts and probate.
