Hull Minster exhibition captures care resident’s creativity

Snap happy residents from a Hull-based care organisation recently got behind the lens to take part in a photography competition, judged by local photographer Neil Holmes.

The Hica Group ran the competition across its 15 homes, two retirement villages, home care providers and their extra care services. The competition was open to all service users, staff, families, friends and trade partners.

One of the area’s leading commercial photographers, Neil Holmes, helped cast a professional eye on over 100 submissions on subjects such as the coast, animals and diversity.

Following a lengthy decisioning process, winners were chosen from three categories; service users, friends and family and trade partners.

All submissions, including the winning pieces are now on display to the public at Hull Minster until September 30 2018.

Visitors of the exhibition can vote for their favourite photo as part of the Hica Group’s people’s choice award.

The winner will be announced at the lavish annual Hica SHINE Ball, which will be attended by hundreds of residents next month at the Royal Hull hotel.

Neil said: “It was fantastic to be involved with such a great competition. All entries were unique and really showed how creative Hica residents, staff and associates are.

“It’s brilliant that the entries are on display in Hull Minster. I really encourage the public to visit the exhibition to see the wonderful work in person.” Hica Group’s chief executive, Penni Brown said: “This has been a great opportunity for residents to explore their creative side and for many to revisit past hobbies.

“Residents really enjoyed getting behind the camera and going out and about with their families and friends. We’re proud of everyone who submitted a photo and the effort that went in to this exhibition.”

Residents of Hica Group homes often participate in creative activities organised by their home’s activity coordinators such as arts and crafts afternoons and knitting activities.

Hull Minster is open to the public Tuesday- Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 8:30am-8pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.

The Hica Group provides specialist care to people with learning disabilities and dementia. Alongside this they provide approximately 11,500 hours of support and care from four regional offices in the North of England.
