Tees Valley conveyor belt manufacturer hosts Mayor Ben Houchen

An independent manufacturer of conveyor belts has hosted Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen at its Stockton premises.

GB Belting was founded in 1985 and today produces customised industrial belting for sectors such as food processing, materials handling, pharmaceuticals and automotive.

It was set up by former ICI development engineer Gerry Byrne, whose son Jeremy now runs the business.

During a visit to the GB Belting’s facilities in Thornaby, Mayor Houchen learned more about the business and how it now exports to more than 70 countries.

GB Belting employs 13 people and has provided belts for a number of big brands with operations in the region, including tea company Tetley and and baking firm Warburtons. It has also provided wind tunnel belts for Formula One testing.

David Smith, sales manager at GB Belting, said: “We were delighted to host the Mayor and show him first-hand what we offer the world, and what we have to offer the area we call home.

“Our discussions were very encouraging as we look to become bigger and better.”

Mayor Houchen commented: “GB Belting’s 33-year history in the region is testament to the confidence firms have in the region, and their ability, big or small, to make a success of themselves.

“Its client list reads like a Who’s Who of top businesses that are clearly pleased with its products, and there is barely an area in the world it does not export to. Much like the Tees Valley itself, GB Belting punches above its weight.”

He added: “I’ve pledged to do whatever it takes to help them get on and can’t wait to hear about their next success.”
