Byker based Primary School Receives Winns Road Safety Donation

A Byker school have labelled a donation of nearly £900 a ‘God send’ as they aim to further educate their children about the importance of road safety.

Winn Solicitors have given St Lawrence Primary School close to £900 worth of road safety equipment in a bid to help improve road awareness and safety among children in the local community as part of the recent national Road Safety Week campaign.

Road safety role play sets, crossing patrol dress-up costumes, a road safety DVD and crossing patrol dress-up costumes were all given to St Lawrence Primary School, with 150 reflectors and 35 hi-viz jackets also given to head-teacher Paul Brown so the children would be safe at nights and also on school trips.

The investment has been welcomed by the school, with Mr Brown delighted that the children have the chance to use this equipment to help improve their knowledge of road safety.

“Children need to be aware about how to keep themselves safe so a donation like this, kindly given to us by Winn Solicitors, is an absolute God send in raising that profile and encouraging the children, and the parents, to think twice about all elements of road safety,” said St Lawrence Primary School head-teacher Paul Brown.

“It is a very unique estate. There are lots of busy roads and cars can come from all directions and other forms of transport. It is very, very tight, so it is particularly important in an area such as this that our children are aware of the dangers that are out there.

“We’ll use the equipment in school for various activities but they’ll also learn through play so they can apply what they need to know out in the big wide world with the materials that Winn Solicitors have kindly provided.”

Associate Director at Winn Solicitors Michael Warmington highlighted the importance of this initiative.

“At Winns we are aware of how important road safety is and just how important it is to educate young children on this subject,” he said.

“We are always keen to help the local community and in donating these toys, reflectors and other items, centred on road awareness, to St Lawrence Primary School, we hope to help raise awareness and help keep children safe.”

Created in 1997, Road Safety Week is designed to educate people about the dangers of the road, with this year holding a focus on cyclists after statistics revealed over a third of the deaths or serious injuries on roads were by those travelling by bike.
