Northumberland multi-million pound town centre transformation gets green light
Funding has been agreed for a multi-million pound scheme to regenerate Ashington town centre.
Northumberland County Council’s cabinet has approved a £4.6m loan and a £3m grant to economic regeneration company Advance Northumberland who will lead the development.
A report to the cabinet outlining proposals read: “If developed effectively, it is felt the site has the ability to transform Ashington and… reposition the town as a new retail and leisure led destination, driving footfall to boost the economy.”
Plans for Ashington town centre include the construction of a 17,000 sq ft seven-screen cinema, as well as shopping centre comprised of a 20,000 sq ft retail store and range of smaller shops for national and independent retailers.
