Work begins on new County Durham homes as part of £70m programme

Construction of a new housing development has officially begun on a brownfield site in Peterlee.

Led by believe housing, formerly known as County Durham Housing Group, the project will deliver 40 new homes to the site situated in Tamar Close and Teign Close.

The development will comprise 29 three-bed family houses alongside 10 two-bed and two three-bed bungalows on the site.

Construction of the homes, which is being carried out by property firm Tolent, is expected to take around 15 months, with the first residents moving in late summer 2020.

Rebecca Marshall, development project manager at believe housing, said: “There’s a really strong demand for affordable homes, and bungalows in particular, across Peterlee.

“This project is designed to help meet some of that demand and support the long-term future of the town.”

These new homes are part of a wider £70m new-build programme by believe housing, which will see over 700 new homes constructed across the county.

Commenting on the Peterlee project, Chris Price, regional director for Tolent, added: “Our teams are some of the most experienced when it comes to delivering projects like this, having delivered over £800m of affordable housing schemes across the north east and beyond.

“It’s key that we’re able to work with forward thinking clients like believe housing who can see the potential in transforming brownfield sites into fantastic spaces to live and we look forward to working together on our first project.”
