North East architecture firm gets green light for £4.5m school redesign

A North East architecture firm has received planning approval for the redesign of a local high school.

GRADONARCHITECTURE has been given the go-ahead by Northumberland County Council for a refurbishment and extension project at Haydon Bridge High School.

The £4.5m development will see a redesign of the site’s existing entrance, including an enlarged coach drop off with DDA access, a concentrated car park and pedestrian access.

In addition, the interior of the site will be transformed with a relocated library, learning resource centre, sixth form area and performing arts spaces.

Located in Ryton in Newcastle, GRADONARCHITECTURE has expanded into new studios in Northern Ireland and Mongolia since being founded in 2009.

Lead technical director on the project, Graeme Kirkley commented: “We are delighted that we have received planning approval and can now begin external works on this project.

“Having worked collaboratively with the School and Council, the redesign considers all requirements and will cater for a greater intake of pupils, provide better access and integrate with the wider community of Haydon Bridge, with the provision of adult learning opportunities and facilities to support the regeneration of the area.”
