Memorial cricket tournament scores cash for national charity

Two cricket tournaments staged by No5 Barristers’ Chambers in memory of a late member have raised a total of £3,375 for the national charity of the Bar – Advocate. The Chambers staged two tournaments, in Birmingham and Bristol respectively, in memory of former Head of Chambers Anthony Barker QC, who died after a lengthy battle against cancer. It is the fourth time the Anthony Barker QC Memorial Shield has been held. The six-a-side competition attracted 13 local teams across both venues and funds were raised for Advocate – the pro bono charity of the Bar which provides free legal help from barristers. Mary Dobson, Joint Chief Operating Officer and Head of Fundraising and Communications at Advocate, said: “Many chambers across the country raise funds for us by hosting events and conferences but No5 is the first ever set of chambers to fundraise for access to justice through that great national tradition; cricket! “We were so delighted to be the recipients of these funds, given that pro bono is a cause close to the heart of No5 members as well as clients. This contribution means that we are able to ensure those who approach us for help are treated with kindness and respect and given appropriate advice and guidance. “Thank you to everyone at No5 Barristers’ Chambers, and to all their clients for so generously donating and making it possible for people to get legal help when they desperately need it.” CEO and Director of Clerking Tony McDaid said: “The memorial shield is our way of keeping Anthony’s memory alive. Cricket was one of his sporting loves and his friends and colleagues at No5 decided that an annual match was a fitting memorial, with all proceeds this year going to Advocate. “Both tournaments were resounding successes and we are delighted to make the donation to such a worthy cause.”
