Redcar and Cleveland set for transport overhaul as £138m strategy enters next phase

Transport proposals worth over £138m for Redcar and Cleveland have been agreed to go to the consultation stage today (September 17).

The draft transport strategy for the borough, titled Transport for the Future, comprises major railway and road improvements, new cycle and walking routes, more parking spaces across the borough and a new link road.

Plans include a park and ride service on the Whitby railway line benefitting East Cleveland, Guisborough and Nunthorpe, improved access to the industrial hub of Teesport and road improvements in more rural areas.

The next phase of the development will see the council seek feedback from local individuals and businesses before putting forward further proposals and sourcing funding for the project.

Cllr Wayne Davies, cabinet member for Economic Development, said: “This is a hugely ambitious programme that will help make the borough an even more fantastic place to live, work, do business, visit and enjoy.

“We particularly want to be ready for the transformational investment at the South Tees Development Corporation site on the south bank of the Tees, which includes the former SSI steelworks.

“We have a major industrial port there already and global companies are being attracted to the borough - but it is vital that our transport network is first rate and environmentally friendly.”
