Over half of employees have quit a job within one year with most citing poor management and working environments
A new survey has revealed that over half of UK workers have quit a job within 12 months, with poor management and working environments most commonly contributing to the reasons why.
HR support company Citiation surveyed 1,000 employees in the United Kingdom and discovered have 55 per cent of them had previously left a job within just 12 months of starting.
The industries with the highest turnover in staff were retail, education, and health care and social sectors, according to the survey’s results.
The study also examined the reasons why so many British workers chose to seek other employment after just a short space of time. The most common reasons were poor management (68 per cent) and working environments (61 per cent).
Alan Price, CEO of BrightHR, said that creating an environment for staff which offers flexibility is crucial when hiring young people that are entering the British workforce.
He said: “Helping staff maintain a stronger work/life balance through flexible working hours gives them more opportunity to pursue commitments outside of work, such as raising a family, and can be a significant incentive for them to stay in the company.”
Richard Holmes, Director of Wellbeing at Westfield Health, also offered advice to businesses to improve their management. He said that employers can better retain staff by listening to what matters to them and reflecting those priorities throughout the business.
He said: “Having a company culture that supports physical and mental wellbeing is key to a productive, engaged workforce with low turnover, as each employee has different motivations that drive them.”
