Funding boost from Beyond Housing for Scarborough youth project

Beyond Housing has donated £500 to the Sidewalk Youth Project. Beyond Housing is marking its first birthday by donating £500 to ten charities and community groups across the footprint it operates in, spanning from Scarborough to Redcar & Cleveland. Baroness Warwick of Undercliffe, Chair of the National Housing Federation (NHF) took the opportunity, while visiting a Beyond Housing development site, to join James Hayward, Beyond Housing Chair and Rosemary Du Rose, Chief Executive, in presenting the cheque. Sidewalk is a youth-led movement for change. For 30 years it has focused on engaging with Scarborough’s most marginalised and at-risk young people on the streets, to support them to develop in all areas of life. Often young people develop their own services through the engagement, including gym groups and skate festivals.

Steve Blower, Project Manager at the Sidewalk Youth Project, said: “Sidewalk is proud to receive a £500 donation in celebration of Beyond Housing’s first birthday!

“A teenager recently said, ‘You know how they say it takes a village to raise the young? Well I think it takes young people to raise a village too!’

“That’s why we’re using the donation to equip young people on Sidewalk’s management group. They’ll develop skills and create exciting new resources for Scarborough’s brilliant young people in 2020”.

Tracy O’Neill, Executive Director of Customers and Communities at Beyond Housing, said: “Beyond Housing is fully committed to supporting the grass-roots groups which do so much to enrich the lives of people within our communities. “Engaging with young people is so important and the work Sidewalk carries out in Scarborough is invaluable in offering support, mentorship and opportunities to develop and grow.”
