Hilton London Heathrow Airport staff help with a splash of colour...

Residents at a Surrey care home are ‘a-door-ing’ a new addition, thanks to the colourful efforts of staff from Hilton London Heathrow Airport.

For the past five years, caring staff from the hotel have been supporting Meadowside Care Home at Staines in a whole host of ways, to enhance the lives of people who live there.

And now the hotel team have delighted the residents with their latest scheme – by turning the gray doors into their rooms into painted front doors in an array of colours.

Sally Cowdrey, activity co-ordinator at the home, said the project not only made the place look brighter, but also had a far more important function for the residents, many of whom suffer from dementia.

“Before we started the project all the doors were a really dull gray,” said Sally.

“But now they’ve been transformed into proper front doors with a door knocker and a personalised laminated nameplate, which makes people feel much more independent and it’s also much easier for them to recognise which room is theirs when it’s painted a different colour

“It was quite hard for them to distinguish which door belonged to them when they were all the same but now we can say ‘your door is blue’ and it means they can find their own room.”

Team members from the hotel fund raised to buy the paint and batons needed to create the front doors, transforming a number of the 50 care home rooms.

“We are incredibly grateful to the hotel which has been a massive support to us,” said Sally. “What they have done really does make a huge difference.”

David Clarke, HR Manager at the hotel, has been working closely with the home and the team members.

“We didn’t hesitate when we found out what the home was planning to do and we’re delighted to have provided the manpower to transform some of the doors for the residents,” he said.

“For us it’s very much about being part of our local community and using the resources we have to help them as much as we can.”

Jurgen Sutherland, General Manager at the Hilton London Heathrow Airport, added that it was important for the hotel to support good causes in the area. The hotel’s activities are in line with Travel with Purpose, Hilton’s corporate responsibility strategy -by 2030, Hilton is committed to double its investment in social impact.

“Many of our team members are from the surrounding areas and it is very important to them to give something back,” said Jurgen.

“I’m very proud that they have worked so hard on this project and we will continue to support Meadowside Care Home.”
