Nissan boss: UK factory ‘unsustainable’ without Brexit trade deal
The global chief of Nissan has said that the firm’s UK car manufacturing plant “will not be sustainable” in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Ashwani Gupta told the BBC that the Sunderland-based plant, which has 7,000 workers, may not be able to remain operational without tariff-free EU access.
Ashwani commented: “You know we are the number one carmaker in the UK and we want to continue. We are committed.
“Having said that, if we are not getting the current tariffs, it’s not our intention but the business will not be sustainable. That’s what everybody has to understand.”
The comments follow the news of a global restructure by the Japanese firm, which will see around 20,000 jobs cut around the world.
Brexit talks between the UK and EU resumed this week, with the UK having until the end of this month to decide whether it wants to request an extension.
