£18m boutique hotel scheme set to join Newcastle’s innovation quarter

Plans for a multi-million pound boutique hotel development in the centre of Newcastle have been unveiled.

International hospitality group Vastint Hospitality has brought forward proposals for an £18m hotel at innovation hub Newcastle Helix.

The group’s first Moxy Hotel in the North East, the scheme will comprise 160 hotel rooms over seven floors, providing accommodation for tourists as well as business leaders and academics visiting Newcastle Helix.

Subject to planning permission from Newcastle City Council, the scheme is expected to open its doors in late 2021.

Sarah Green, chief executive at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, commented: “This new hotel in the heart of our city centre will be surrounded by innovation, businesses, people, and culture.

“Newcastle Helix is such an asset to our region, playing an instrumental role in driving new investment, influencing business relocation decisions, and creating a place where people can live well.

“This new investment will support us with the recovery of our economy and further position Newcastle Helix as a place to live, work and enjoy.”

Councillor Ged Bell, Cabinet member for employment and culture at Newcastle City Council, added: “This hotel is a milestone in the story of Newcastle Helix and comes at a time when creating jobs has never been more important as we recover from the pandemic.

“Business leaders, academics and experts travel from all over the world to attend conferences, study, work and enjoy our wonderful city, so a hotel would be well suited to the site.

“I look forward with interest on this exciting scheme which highlights the huge contribution Newcastle Helix is making to the local economy.”
