Temple Bright advises ASI on London W1 healthcare construction project One Welbeck

London and Bristol law firm Temple Bright has advised Ambulatory Surgery International (ASI) up to completion of the first phase of OneWelbeck, a conversion of commercial offices into a high end, healthcare day surgery facility in Marylebone, London W1.   Welbeck Health (the trading name for ASI) is a new day surgery startup in the UK private medical market. Its first facility, OneWelbeck, will provide nine floors covering imaging suites, general consulting, operating theatres, procedure rooms and recovery facilities. The former offices are being transformed into a specialist facility for day surgery and outpatient diagnostics, aiming for levels of comfort and care beyond those usually available in the UK market.   The first phase of works, comprising the refurbishment and conversion of the basement up to the third floor has now reached practical completion and includes state of the art facilities for Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Orthopaedics, as well as a World class Imaging and Diagnostics suite. The second phase comprises shell and core alterations and the fit out of additional floors to accommodate further specialties including Women’s Healthcare, ENT, Dermatology, Respiratory Health, and space for an executive screening program. The second phase is due to complete in the course of the summer.   Temple Bright has acted for OneWelbeck from the inception of the project, on all legal aspects including corporate, construction, banking, real estate, employment, tax, insurance, medicolegal, planning, incentives, and commercial contracts advice. More recently Temple Bright has assisted the business during the Covid-19 crisis.

The team is led by client partner Stuart Hutson (corporate), who has extensive experience in the private healthcare market and advised OneWelbeck on funding rounds up to and including a recent Series B investment. He is joined by David Sanson (real estate) who advised on site acquisition, and Julia Davenport-Cooper (construction) who is advising on construction contracts for phases one and two as well as further aspects of the scheme, such as the redesign of the reception space on the ground floor for pharmacy and café facilities.   **Julia Davenport-Cooper said: **“It has been a pleasure and a privilege to advise ASI on this milestone project, involving a state of the art facility that we expect to set new standards for patient care in the UK. OneWelbeck is a hugely exciting project presenting a unique opportunity. I look forward to helping ASI conclude the scheme.”   OneWelbeck is associated with AmSurg, the world’s leading operator of standalone daycase surgeries which operates a portfolio of over 250 surgery centres across the USA.   Stuart Hutson said: “Temple Bright is proud to have been so intimately involved in the planning and development of this new world class private healthcare facility in the heart of London. The project is a huge credit to all those involved and we look forward to supporting the business as its exciting development continues.”   Temple Bright as launched by three partners in Bristol in 2010, using a tech-enabled, streamlined business model.
