Life After Lockdown: How subscription services are becoming an "emerging phenomenon" in hairdressing

As the country emerges from lockdown, it’s a very different landscape for a lot of businesses.

Bdaily spoke to business owners across the country about how they’re changing their ways of working, and what innovations they’re adopting permanently after lockdown.

Sam Wall, an international barber based in the North East, has created one of the first hairdressing membership services to help the industry recover.

The subscription, named 5:AM, gives members access to services, products and discounts and offers “significant” savings against paying face value.

5:AM, which builds on the success of subscriptions in other industries, is a first for the North of England and one of the first in the UK.

Through the membership package, clients will be able to secure priority bookings for appointments with Sam at his base in Gateshead.

Sam commented: “The value of a great haircut or style cannot be underestimated, but the hairdressing industry needs to innovate to make sure they’re making that accessible.

“In these very challenging times, we need to make sure we’re offering both excellent service and value, and giving our clients the incentive to come to us as often as they would like.

“Similarly, having experienced three months of not being able to work during lockdown, now that we’re able to do our jobs again, stylists need to protect their own work stream and build their client base by being more business-focused.

“I created 5:AM to do exactly that, so it works for the client and stylist alike. I have spoken to a number of leading names in the industry prior to its launch and they agree this is highly likely to be the future of our profession and membership will probably soon become commonplace in the UK.

“Already, in the first few days of 5:AM, the response has been phenomenal. It’s great to be at the forefront of this emerging phenomenon in UK hairdressing.”
