Employers urged to take advantage of new apprentice incentives

Employers are being offered financial incentives to develop their workforces by hiring apprentices.

North East businesses can take advantage of government payments for new apprentices hired from August 1, and what’s more – there’s an industry-leading apprenticeship delivery partner on the doorstep.

Northern Skills Group – apprenticeship arm of Middlesbrough College – not only provides high quality apprenticeship training programmes tailored to employers’ needs, but also runs a crucial free recruitment service that can benefit firms.

County Durham-based construction and logistics specialist Starkold found its ideal candidates in twins Leah and Kayla Turnbull.

The 18-year-olds had applied to the same job at Starkold via Northern Skills Group’s recruitment service and impressed so much that two jobs as financial trainees were created to accommodate both.

The pair are now learning vital financial skills spanning evaluations and accountancy through their ATT Accountancy course.

So, what actually is the Government’s new funding scheme – and how can it help your business?

From August 1 the government will introduce a new payment of £2,000 to employers in England for each new apprentice they hire aged under 25, and a £1,500 payment for each new apprentice they hire aged 25 and over.

These payments will be in addition to the existing £1,000 already provided for new 16-18-year-old apprentices.

This means employers could receive up to £3,000 for hiring 16 to 18-year-old apprentices from August to January – a great way to give your business the edge.
