£4.9m residential development completes in South Tyneside

A new multi-million pound housing scheme in South Tyneside is officially ready to welcome new residents after being completed this week.

Contractor Tolent has handed the newly-completed Whitburn Towers development over to South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust.

Comprising a total 36 rental apartments, the £4.9m development is made up of a main three-storey block as well as a separate two-storey annex building to the rear of the site.

Replacing a previous sheltered accommodation facility that was demolished in 2017, Whitburn Towers is the latest scheme the trust, which is working in partnership with South Tyneside Homes and Homes England to provide independent living to over-55s in the area.

Peter Davidson, Chair of South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust, commented: “On behalf of the board at South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust, I would like to thank and acknowledge the tremendous work delivered by the team at Tolent in the completion of Whitburn Towers. We are delighted with the outcome.

“It’s an amazing development that also demonstrates great collaboration from our partners at South Tyneside Council and South Tyneside Homes.”

Chris Price, regional director for Tolent, added: “The improvement in the quality of the homes Whitburn Towers now offers, when compared to the previous scheme is second-to-none. It’s been a pleasure to work with all the partners on this scheme.

“With over 35 years’ experience within housing and over 5,000 homes built across the North East alone, this is another fantastic example of our experience within this sector.”
