Original rooms at historic Redworth Hall get specialist makeover

S Nicholson and Sons, a bespoke painting and decorating service, has been renovating five of the original bedroom suites at the Grade II listed Redworth Hall in Heighington, County Durham.

Redworth Hall is one of Durham’s most historic country houses. Set within 26 acres of undisturbed woodlands and gardens, the original Jacobean building dates back to 1744, when it was built as a private home for the Surtees family, a military family with a long attachment to the Durham Light Infantry.

It was first converted into a hotel in 1987 and has been remodelled since to include spa and conferencing facilities. Redworth Hall last changed hands in 2016 when it was purchased by the current operator, premium leisure group operator Cairn Hotel Group.

Vince Johnson, General Manager at Redworth Hall, said: “ After lockdown it’s even more important than ever that all parts of the hotel look their best and that our guests enjoy staying in them. We take special care of the original rooms, hence bringing in specialists like Nicholson’s to undertake the work to ensure a high quality finish.

“They have worked on many of our investment projects over recent years, including the refurbishment of our Great Hall, the ceilings in our large Prince Bishop Suite, and redecorated lots of the other bedrooms. I hope we can continue working together more once the virus has been put behind us.”

S Nicholson and Sons is based in Bishop Auckland and specialises in the restoration of heritage and listed buildings, including Raby Castle, Rockliffe Hall and Hallgarth Manor. Stephen Nicholson, managing director of S Nicholson and Sons, said: “Visiting Redworth Hall should feel like an experience and any refurbishment has to be done with care and expertise. Our team has worked here before so they understand what we need to do to prepare the surfaces and fixings, what paints will work best and how to protect this unique space as it continues to be a busy and inspiring place.

“We’ve worked closely with the management team to ensure the finish fits with their long term plans for Redworth Hall and we’re proud to play a part in its success.”
