Furniture firm gives new lease of life to building in heart of Northumberland town

A growing North East furniture business has announced the launch of a new outlet in Northumberland.

Quay Furniture has opened a new store on Ashington’s high street, bringing a prominent vacant building back to life.

The company has leased the 8,435 sq ft open-plan base on 2-4 Woodhorn Road, which has been vacant for two years.

Based in Royal Quays in North Shields and a sister company to Blyth-based Northumbria Flooring, Quay Furniture is owned by furniture specialist James Cunningham and offers a range of products including sofas, tables and beds.

The launch of the Ashington store has created four new jobs at the company, bringing its headcount to 18.

James Cunningham, owner of Quay Furniture, commented: “We look forward to welcoming the people of Ashington and surrounding areas to help them shop local for all their furniture needs.

“We are delighted with the new building and we have ambitious plans for it, providing a fantastic base for our furniture showroom”.

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, chair of Advance Northumberland and cabinet member for economic development at Northumberland County Council, added: “It’s great to see such a prominent high street building that has not been used for some time brought back into use.

“This new retail offer will add to the shopping opportunities that are already available on our high street and elsewhere in the town, all saving people time and money.”
