Work begins on airspace modular homes development in South London
Construction has begun on a new airspace residential development in South London.
Developer Apex Airspace (Apex) in partnership with Lambeth and Southwark Housing Association (LSHA), has commenced work on 30 homes and improvements to the existing buildings at Antony House & Roderick House in Bermondsey.
The new airspace properties, designed by HTA Design LLP, are being developed on top of, next to, and connecting two existing residential buildings.
The properties, which will be built offsite using modular methods, will comprise a mixture of one and two-bedroom apartments.
Arshad Bhatti, CEO at Apex Airspace, said: “Having worked closely with Lambeth and Southwark Housing Association and HTA, we are delighted to get underway with 30 new affordable homes and significant improvements at Antony & Roderick House in Bermondsey.
“Our collaboration with LSHA demonstrates our ability to unlock a previously untapped supply of affordable housing in London and be able to deliver policy compliant rented accommodation in partnership with local authorities and housing associations.
“At Apex, we set out to make a tangible difference to the residential landscape in London and to address the UK’s housing shortage. It’s fantastic to see our vision become a reality in projects such as Antony & Roderick redevelopment, offering vital, affordable new homes in the capital.”
Jonathan Poole, construction director at Apex Airspace, commented: “We look forward to working through the build stage with Adston as our Design and Build Contractor for the development of Antony and Roderick House.
“The 100 per cent affordable development of 30 new homes will be the UK’s first airspace project to be built on top of and connecting two existing residential buildings.
“The modular construction will save the residents from normal construction works disruption, particularly with the limited space surrounding the existing building.’’
