There’s more to escalating energy bills than the price of gas, says claims management specialists Winn Solicitors

Hidden business energy commission is putting more financial pressure on businesses at a time when the future is already uncertain

Organisations and individuals alike have been thrown into uncertainty as a result of the ongoing energy crisis. Many of the UK’s leading energy suppliers have gone into administration in recent months, forcing customers onto new contracts with suppliers they have no history of working with and with whom contract terms were never formally agreed. This, paired with devastating gas shortages and price rises, has created an energy landscape riddled with doubt and ambiguity.

But rising prices aren’t the only concern for businesses when it comes to their energy. After their own experience of suffering at the hands of mis-sold energy contracts, North East-based claims management specialists, Winn Solicitors are encouraging more businesses to look closely at their bills and take a stand against price increases that are hiding unfair energy commissions.

CEO of Winn Group, Jeff Winn, explains how his company’s own experience has cemented the business’s commitment to helping organisations recoup their losses.

Winn says: “Like many businesses we believed that the energy brokers we worked with had our best interests in mind when negotiating contracts on our behalf. We believed we were being sold the most competitive contracts.

“However, the truth is that hidden within our contracts were inflated commissions and pricing that was not genuinely based on the wholesale rate of gas and electric.”

Winn continues: “As a result of our experience we are now committed to raising awareness and helping businesses understand that, if they have been mis-sold an energy contract, we can help them to recover compensation after being mis-sold a business energy contract.”

By offering support for mis-sold and unethical contracts on a no win, no fee basis, Winns have made it possible for organisations to pursue compensation and recoup a substantial portion of their energy bills, without upfront costs.

This is an important step in the fight against hidden business energy commission, as mis-sold energy contracts are impacting organisations of all sizes across the UK. In fact, Ofgem reports that businesses, charities and public bodies alike are now spending £25 billion a year on energy, and a significant percentage of this is made up of undisclosed fees.

Because business energy contracts are not as tightly regulated as domestic ones, unethical brokers are able to include hidden charges in their agreements at the expense of their customers. They receive fees from suppliers for introducing them to clients, giving them an incentive to recommend certain contracts that may not actually be best for their customers. The details of this commission often remain undisclosed within the contract, meaning businesses can pay these extra costs without even realising.

Winns’ own mis-sold contract claim lies in the region of 20% of energy costs. And with their help it is estimated that organisations who have been charged unfair commissions can recoup between 10% and 20% of their annual bill. In addition, Winns can also help break mis-sold contracts and steer businesses onto 100% green energy contracts that are both transparent and ethical.
