Battersea Power Station to support local small businesses with “unique” retail partnership

Curated Makers, a retail concept that links local independent artists and makers with the high street, will be opening its first pop-up in London at the Grade II listed Battersea Power Station.

The retail and leisure destination will open its doors to the public for the first time from October 14. The “unique” store will host more than 40 local independent small businesses selling homeware, candles, clothing, artwork and much more.

Since launching in 2017, the Manchester based “marketplace champion” has hosted a series of pop-ups in large stores and shopping centres including John Lewis, M&S, Paperchase and Next.

Having received the government’s Innovate UK Young Innovators grant with an initial investment of £5,000 in 2020 and more recently with a Follow-on Fund of £50k in 2022, the business is going from strength to strength.

A welcome recipient of the Prince’s Trust, set up by King Charles III, Curated Makers has “benefited greatly” from the charity’s support for the business and the makers that it continues to champion.

CEO and Founder of Curated Makers, Megan Jones, commented: “We are so excited to be opening at Battersea Power Station. Our permanent ‘pop-up’ allows local curators to have the opportunity to sell their hand-made goods on a huge scale.

“Our concept is novel. We are makers first and connect the small independent businesses to large, established retailers. I believe in putting people first, celebrating talent, showing that entrepreneurship is a route for anyone that has the passion and vision to make it work.

“We make it easy to shop small, whilst already in a shopping environment. The in-person shopping experience simply cannot be replicated online. To touch, feel and smell products made from local craftspeople, meeting them on the shop floor and even watching them work in the store, is what our stores are all about.”

Sam Cotton, head of leasing at Battersea Power Station, added: “Supporting small, independent businesses has been a key element to creating the new retail and leisure destination at Battersea Power Station from the very beginning, as seen with the great mix of independent retailers that have been open in Circus West Village since 2017.

“We are continuing to work with independents inside the Power Station and are excited to have local artisans selling their wares at Curated Makers when we open the Power Station’s doors on October 14.”
