Leeds University Business School invests in “world class” audio visual learning space

Leeds University Business School has devised a specialist learning environment comprising teaching rooms and behaviour labs designed for in person and distance learning.

The “flagship” space enables postgraduates to access teaching without the need to travel across the university campus and allows internal and external participation. Digital innovation was said to be key in order for education to be delivered to students seamlessly, and allow collaborative learning remotely.

Audio visual specialists, Universal AV, consulted on the build, specifying the audio visual solutions required, and were tendered to carry out the integration.

Mark Atkinson, sales manager at Universal AV, commented: “The Esther Simpson building provides a truly inclusive space for learning. The building is fully accessible, and specialist and expert consideration has been given to providing generous space, fluid access for all, and features to assist people with visual, hearing and cognitive difficulties.”

Working with construction team BAM, Universal AV carried out the audio-visual integration, devising project management plans and priorities.

The final environment and technology now includes a Harvard style lecture theatre, a traditional lecture theatre, flat floored collaborative teaching environments, seminar rooms, trading rooms, an IT cluster, behaviour labs, a data collection lab, an observation room, two boardrooms and informal areas.

Dr Helen Hughes, associate professor, Leeds University Business School, noted: “The behaviour labs are a really exciting part of the Esther Simpson Building. I’m proud of the way colleagues from across the business school came together in the design to make sure the needs of our community were met.

“These state of the art facilities place us at the forefront of the sector, enabling us to both develop innovation research designs, whilst enhancing our teaching practices.”

Tamsin Barrow, facilities manager at Leeds University Business School, added: “We have built an innovative flagship building fit for the future. The technology installed is flexible enough to adapt to our future needs. We worked together with Universal AV to make this possible and our needs were met fully.”

The Esther Simpson building is now an operational accessible teaching space, enhancing the further education experience for many students.
