This week’s North East appointments: Featuring Newcastle United’s new CCO, Avison Young and more

This week’s round up of North East appointments, in association with the North of Tyne Combined Authority Good Work Pledge includes Newcastle United, Cairn Group, Stantec and Avison Young. Read on to find out more.


Peter Silverstone, Newcastle United

Newcastle United has announced the appointment of Peter Silverstone as the club’s new chief commercial officer (CCO). Peter joins the club from OneFootball, where he was senior vice president of global development, responsible for OneFootball’s clubs, leagues, federations and players network and partnerships division.

Peter brings almost two decades of commercial experience in the football industry that will be critical to delivering the club’s ambitious commercial growth plans.

Prior to OneFootball, Peter spent almost seven years at Arsenal FC, leaving his role as chief commercial officer in February 2022. Peter initially joined Arsenal in 2015 as business development director before becoming a key member of the Arsenal executive team in 2018 in the roles of commercial director and then chief commercial officer.

Born in Glasgow, Peter attended Edinburgh University where he read law before beginning his professional career in investment banking with Morgan Stanley.

Peter said: “I am delighted, and honoured, to join Newcastle United as the club embarks on its exciting journey to build a sustainable, leading, Premier League and European club. Achieving that position will reward the unrivalled passion and loyalty of the incredible Newcastle United fans.

Newcastle United CEO, Darren Eales, added: “We are delighted to announce Peter Silverstone as the club’s new CCO. After an extensive recruitment process, we are confident we have found the right person to work with our team to deliver our commercial growth plans.”

David Ladd, Cairn Group

Newcastle based Cairn Group has appointed a food and beverage operations director to oversee its portfolio of standalone restaurants and bars. David Ladd joins from Bar Soba Group where he headed the Pan Asian brand and was responsible for an annual turnover of more than £10m and 200 employees.

He has worked for “well-known” companies in the hospitality sector including Cameron’s Brewery, Mahiki Group, where he was involved in the successful launch of Speyside malt Whisky Copper Dog, and Newcastle-based Black Door Group.

Cairn Group operates individually branded bars and restaurants across the UK in addition to 28 hotels. These include cocktail bars and restaurants offering Italian, Asian and British cuisine, such as Jalou in Newcastle and York, Juniper in Edinburgh and Sohe in Newcastle.

David commented: “I am delighted to be joining Cairn Group and getting to know its diverse portfolio of bars, restaurants and hotels. I was very impressed by the professionalism and passion of the Cairn team. This is a fantastic opportunity, and I am excited to get started.”

Planning and design consultancy Barton Willmore, now Stantec, has expanded the team at its Newcastle office with a quartet of new recruits.

Michelle Robinson joins after a career in local authority planning spanning more than 20 years. Michelle was the former planning team lead at Durham County Council, where she led the team that saw Durham’s Local Plan adopted in 2020. She has also worked for local authorities in Stockton and East Sussex.

Amy Hindson has joined the Newcastle team as a planning associate, having previously worked at Avison Young in Newcastle. A Geography graduate with a Master’s degree in Town Planning at Newcastle University, Amy advises on all aspects of planning, from initial site appraisals through developing site planning strategies.

Matt Hewitt joins the Newcastle team as a senior planner with five years’ experience advising on planning matters, having previously worked at David Lock Associates in Milton Keynes before relocating to the North East. The Plymouth University Geography graduate works on a wide variety of projects for commercial clients.

Ewan Darroch starts at the Newcastle office as a graduate planner, having recently finished an MSc in Urban Planning at Newcastle University following his BSc in Urban Planning and Property Development at Edinburgh University. Ewan is working on housing developments across the North East as well as a garden village project in Buckinghamshire.

James Hall, planning director at Barton Willmore, now Stantec, in Newcastle and Leeds, said: “We’re delighted to see the team at our Newcastle office strengthened and expanded with the addition of Matt, Amy, Michelle and Ewan.

“Their combined talent, experience and energy will be of great benefit to our clients, not just in the North East but across the country.”

Daniel Flint, Avison Young

Commercial real estate services firm Avison Young has made a further senior appointment in the building team at their Newcastle office.

Daniel Flint joins, bringing a wealth of Project Management experience across many industry sectors. Daniel has spent 12 years working in London for a variety of fit-out and FM contractors. He will be involved with all aspects of project management on major development projects throughout the north east and beyond.

Daniel commented: “Avison Young is involved in some of the largest, most high-profile developments in the region. The opportunity to lead in industry, expand my knowledge and work on cutting edge projects is extremely appealing.”

Gordon Hewling, principal and managing director at Avison Young, Newcastle, added: “This is a further key appointment for the expanding office and within our extremely busy Building team. The office holds a strong position in the market, providing strategic real estate advice to both the public and private sectors.

“Daniel brings a great deal of experience which will strengthen our offer in the region and beyond. His track record working for contractors on the delivery side and his detailed understanding of M&E services will enable us to enhance our service for key clients, with a particular focus on design coordination throughout the life of a project.

“We have a very healthy confirmed pipeline and Daniel’s appointment represents a positive move to increase our resources to meet the demand going forward for a strong client base.”
