This week’s North East appointments: Featuring Newcastle College, Onyx Health and Silverstone Building Consultancy

This week’s round up of North East appointments includes Newcastle College, Onyx Health and Silverstone Building Consultancy. Read on to find out more.

Liam Carr, NCG (Newcastle College)

NCG has appointed its first sustainability and curriculum officer to be based at Newcastle College. The role has been created to ensure all its students have sustainability embedded in their education to increase their future employability prospects.

Liam Carr steps into the role with over 20 years’ experience in the education sector. Starting his career in education as a science teacher, Liam went on to teach internationally in India before returning to the UK to take up a role at Newcastle Sixth Form College and, most recently, led the access to higher education department at Newcastle College.

Liam commented: “The current climate change targets set by the government mean that when it comes to sustainability, the workforce must begin to adapt to be fit for the future. It is our job as educators to support this transition for the next generation of the working world.

“A key part of NCG’s strategy to 2030 is ensuring positive destinations for our students and I believe skills and knowledge in sustainability will become essential to employment.

“My role will focus on giving students exposure to the sustainability sector and sustainable practices, not just in traditional courses that you might initially think like those taught in our Energy Academy, but across the curriculum spectrum.”

Tony Lewin, executive principal and executive lead for sustainability at NCG, added: “This is a really important role for NCG, both as part of our environmental commitments and our role in preparing our students for the working world of the future.

“With the appointment of Liam, he is on hand to support our members of staff to feel confident to encourage conversation around sustainability through everyday language, raising awareness among our students.”

(L - R): Rosie Thompson and Modupe Ayeni, Onyx Health

Creative healthcare marketing communications agency Onyx Health has strengthened its account management and medical writing teams with two new appointments; Rosie Thompson as an account manager and Modupe Ayeni as a medical writer.

North East native Rosie Thompson joins the team at Onyx Health from Newcastle based agency Curtis Gabriel, where she worked as an account strategist across various accounts and sectors.

Prior to this, she worked for the leading national bakery chain Greggs, as a retail marketing coordinator. Rosie is a graduate of Northumbria University with a BA in Journalism and English and a Master’s in Mass Communication Management.

Modupe Ayeni was born in Nigeria, and has a PhD in Cardiovascular Science from The University of Leicester, where she also studied Physiology with Pharmacology at an undergraduate level.

Before making the move into agency life, Modupe worked as a PhD researcher at The University of Leicester and later taught science in Middlesbrough, part of the Outwood Academy Trust. She brings a wealth of specialist knowledge and expertise to her new role.

Onyx Health’s managing director Trevor Pill, commented: “Our new team members will enhance our scientific and medical expertise across various disease areas and clinical specialisms and bolster the account management and client liaison services we offer as an agency.”

Martin Bradley, Silverstone Building Consultancy

The Newcastle office at Silverstone Building Consultancy has appointed Martin Bradley as chartered building surveyor. His arrival follows the recent appointment of Michael McMahon as a graduate building surveyor and Bradley Wild as a chartered building surveyor at its Leeds office.

Martin from Bedlington, Northumberland, joins from Newcastle University, where he worked in the estates and facilities department. Silverstone Building Consultancy is a specialist firm of chartered building surveyors and project managers, with offices in Leeds and Newcastle and currently employs 16 staff.

Martin commented: “Silverstone Building Consultancy has a very solid reputation in the local surveying network and I kept hearing positive reviews from some of the team that I already knew. The fact it is an independent firm appealed to me as did the clear progression routes that are available to all staff.

“There is a great energy and a real can-do spirit within the office. The team are confident and ambitious but at the same time recognise that success is only truly possible through a strong team culture. I am really looking forward to supporting our ongoing projects and see this move as a great opportunity to develop my career.”

Director Richard Farrey, added: “It is very reassuring to know that Martin had received good reviews about the company from friends of his that work here. Reputation means everything in business.

“It is not won easily and there are a number of connecting factors that contribute to it. In the case of Silverstone, we believe it has much to do with our commitment to our core values, which are at the heart of all our interactions.”
