Utilita Arena Newcastle announces new University of Sunderland partnership

Utilita Arena Newcastle and University of Sunderland announce a brand-new partnership intended to create opportunity and offer on-the-ground access to the region’s biggest live events, for university students in the North East.

Utilita Arena Newcastle is an 11,000-capacity arena and has played host to some of the biggest names and shows in recent years including Sam Fender, Genesis, Stormzy, Little Mix, Dua Lipa, Lewis Capaldi, and Busted, Kiss and Michael Bublé are just some of the names lined up for 2023.

Students on University of Sunderland’s courses will be offered an “unrivalled” opportunity to work alongside the arena team when shows come to the venue.

This includes marketing challenges and having back of house access with the events team, providing work experience as large-scale events are taking place, preparing students for the workplace and creating further opportunity in the region.

What’s more, the University’s own radio station, Spark, will be presenting shows live from the arena on event days, with behind-the-scenes access for the station’s presenters and its journalism students. Presenters will be able to report on the sights and sounds in the build up to an event going live, as well as interviews with members of the venue team.

Caroline Ginnane, general manager of Utilita Arena Newcastle, commented: “We are beyond thrilled to be working with University of Sunderland providing opportunities to their students and highlighting our amazing industry and what careers are available not just in our venue but across the sector.”

Jane Oswald, head of marketing of University of Sunderland, added: “The University is delighted to be working with ASM Global on this exciting partnership which will bring huge benefits to both current and future students.

“Our professions-facing approach to teaching means this collaboration will provide real-life insight and experience for those looking towards a career in the events industry.

“Students on courses such as event management, journalism, photography, marketing, media and business will all benefit from behind-the-scenes access and real-life experience in working with the arena management team”.

Scott Robson, event manager at Utilita Arena Newcastle and Event Management Graduate of University of Sunderland, concluded: “As a former student it is great to have such a strong academic institute broadening its reach across the region, enriching the experience of the university’s students.”
