New team spearheads Hampshire housebuilder’s ‘Dignity and Respect’ programme in time for Pride Month
A brand-new committee will drive forward Barratt Homes Southampton division’s diversity programme, ensuring equality across its business during Pride Month.
The Dignity and Respect (D&R) committee was formed at Southampton division’s Hedge End HQ as part of the housebuilder’s national initiative to recognise and celebrate differences in its workforce, as well as challenge and call out opportunities to improve the way they work together.
Now, a dedicated team of six employees – Rachel Ballam, Annamaria Nichols, Ben Cooper, Rebecca Edwards, Amanda Scott and Victoria Grinnall – the D&R committee will bridge the gap between employees and senior managers.
They will meet once a month to take action to encourage equality and inclusion across the organisation, and regularly assess the way Barratt works, ensuring that it continues to provide a workplace where all its employees feel comfortable to be themselves.
It’s perfect timing as the committee comes together for Pride Month, which runs throughout June to achieve and celebrate equal justice and opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) communities.
Ben Cooper, Sales Manager at Barratt Homes has been selected as Chair, and Rebecca Edwards, Barratt Homes Marketing Executive, will be Deputy Chair.
Ben said: “Everyone, regardless of who they are or what they do, should feel equally involved in and supported at work, and Barratt is committed to weaving inclusive practices into everything it does, and I am proud to be chairing such a forward-thinking programme.”
Rebecca Edwards, who’s been working in Barratt Southampton’s Marketing department for just over a year, says that having an inclusive workplace culture not only helps attract a diverse set of talent but also helps retain staff.
She said: “Barratt knows that a diverse team means a stronger business – it’s better for its customers and makes it a more attractive employer.
“As a female, working in the construction world, it’s great that companies like Barratt are working hard to ensure there are roles for everyone regardless of gender, race, or background. Not only does this level the playing field for equal opportunities, but it creates a richer and more vibrant working environment. I’m looking forward to helping the company take further steps to support its employees.”
In the last few years, Barratt has undertaken a significant number of actions to ensure it is more diverse and inclusive, including offering training to all its employees, supporting future female leaders, reviewing flexible working practices, and updating and improving its family-friendly policies. The developer is committed to ongoing activity to support its workforce.
