Newcastle United FC “key” to attracting new talent to city’s technology sector

A high-flying Newcastle United is “key” to supporting the growth of the city’s technology sector, according to specialist recruitment company, SPG Resourcing.

The technology specialist recruiters argue that Newcastle’s brand reaches a global audience thanks to the popularity of the Premier League. It helps to attract the “vital” tech talent the city needs to continue to grow the sector.

Mhairi Allan, associate director at SPG Resourcing, commented: “A successful football team drives everything from tourism to inward investment. The global reach of the Premier League puts Newcastle on the radar for talented tech professionals.

“Sport has been recognised for its substantial contribution to national, regional, and local economies. It not only brings direct benefits but also cultivates a transformative culture and image in cities and regions.

“Newcastle has a lot to offer tech industry employees, including exciting employment opportunities, improved quality of life, and a lower cost of living compared to the South East.”

Recent research by Accenture reveals that Newcastle experienced an 85 per cent surge in demand for technology professionals, the highest among all UK cities. The UK Tech Talent Tracker study highlights significant growth in job postings driven by increased demand for cloud skills (up 77 per cent) and blockchain expertise (up 69 per cent).

SPG Resourcing helps companies and organisations across the digital sector find the talent they need. It operates nationally from offices in Newcastle and Leeds. It works across the technology sector, specialising in health, finance and social housing. The company saw revenue hit £3.95m in its first 17 months and recruited 11 staff.
