Newcastle Falcons ‘legends’ tackle new industry at local wealth management firm

Following successful and lengthy sporting careers at Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club, Alex Tait and Will Welch have joined a growing local financial advice firm, Professional Wealth Management (PWM), as financial advisers based in Newcastle.

Both players have achieved a huge amount of success in their rugby careers and will “bring the same determination, passion, and energy” to their new roles in financial planning and advice that made them ‘legends’ at the Falcons.

PWM has delivered work experience and supported the pair as they have achieved appropriate qualifications prior to tackling this new challenge.

Stephen Dickinson, director of PWM, commented: “As single club players Alex and Will are well known to the Newcastle community for their commitment, success and consistent delivery on and off the field. I’ve been impressed by their leadership skills and positive attitudes, both key attributes to helping build and drive a business forward.”

Will Welch became the Falcons’ youngest ever captain when he took over the reins at the age of just 22 and spent 15 years playing for his hometown. He sits joint-second on the Falcons’ all-time appearance list having played 275 matches.

Will said: “In professional sports a strong financial plan and second career are often overlooked. I hope that our experience will help inform fellow rugby players, professional sportsmen and women and support many more PWM clients with financial planning and advice.”

Alex Tait, 35, a former Barnard Castle school pupil, was a full-time professional with Newcastle Falcons for 16 years. He played 271 times for the Falcons with a tally of forty tries.

Alex added: “You learn quickly in the world of rugby that things don’t always go according to plan no matter how much you have prepared. I’m determined to help my clients manage any changes in their financial plans to make sure that they get the results they need.”

Stephen Dickinson concluded: “We have been able to attract the calibre of people like Alex and Will through the support of our parent company, IWP (Independent Wealth Planners). IWP has supported the development of our graduate training programme that will help ensure the sustainability and growth of the business.

“Grounded in the arrival of Alex and Will, we now have a new generation of financial advisers with the right mindset and skills required to set up the firm for the future and help to serve more clients in the Newcastle area.”
