Sheffield plans to boost housing growth following city visit from Homes England and the Department of Levelling Up

The Sheffield Property Association (S-PA) was very pleased to join a citywide collaboration of key leaders and stakeholders to unveil ambitious plans to create vibrant neighbourhoods, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and affordable housing options in Sheffield.

The event included representatives from government and organisations, including the Chief Executive of Homes England, the Permanent Secretary from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, the Mayor of South Yorkshire and the MP for Sheffield South East.

The gathering commenced with a dinner at Sheffield’s Kelham Island, during which participants discussed the current economic climate and its implications for both short-term and long-term plans and opportunities for the city.

The next day, a selection of partners embarked on a tour of Sheffield’s Heart of the City ll development. This flagship project, which began in 2017 and is set to conclude in 2024, spans seven hectares at the heart of the city centre and aims to create a vibrant destination for living, working, shopping, and visiting.

The tour included visits to various development plots, including the Kangaroo Works housing development consisting of 370 homes, the Isaacs House development with 50 new homes, several workspace buildings totalling 500,000 square feet of office space, the upcoming Radisson Blu hotel scheduled to open in early 2024, and the recently opened Pounds Park.

During the meeting, the Council provided updates on social infrastructure plans, including proposed district centres in the emerging Local Plan and plans for GP hubs. Sheffield’s thriving theatre district, the largest outside of London, was highlighted, along with discussions on plans for a “Gallery of the North” at the Graves Building.

Housing Association partners emphasised the need for a rent settlement and greater clarity on building safety regulations within their sector. The partners also recognised the potential requirement for a new school in the city centre, given the envisioned scale of new city centre living.
