Sheffield Hallam strikes ‘first-of-its-kind’ partnership with football academy
Sheffield Hallam has partnered with football academy Unipro to offer a ‘first-of-its-kind’ programme for elite international players to further their athletic development whilst pursuing a higher education qualification at the University.
The collaboration will immerse footballers in high-level coaching, strength and conditioning and match play alongside a degree in fields such as sport business management, sport and exercise science and sport coaching. Training sessions are scheduled around academic lectures and assessments to enable students to excel in both sport and studies.
The football academy and degree programme offers a ‘unique’ experience for dedicated student-athletes to fulfil their potential in sport and secure their future interests off the field. Students will graduate with both football skills honed on Sheffield’s pitches and facilities as well as an internationally recognised degree from Sheffield Hallam University.
The Unipro-Sheffield Hallam programme allows players to “develop a well-rounded skillset on and off the pitch”. The combination of athletic development and academic credentials provides a foundation for individuals to build a career as either an elite athlete or in alternative sporting pathways.
Paul Dickov, Unipro Director of Football and former professional footballer, commented: “We are immensely proud of our partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, which significantly enhances our International Academy programme.
“With the remarkable educational and athletic facilities provided by Sheffield Hallam University, students will thoroughly enjoy their academic and athletic experiences, thriving in every aspect of their development.”
David Binney, Programme Lead at Sheffield Hallam University, added: “We are thrilled to partner with Unipro on this innovative new football academy that aligns with Sheffield Hallam’s commitment to providing our students with transformative educational experiences.
“This programme enables talented athletes to develop their football skills with elite training whilst also earning a high-quality degree recognised across the world. We look forward to welcoming the first cohort of student-athletes to the programme and supporting their academic and athletic journeys.”
Dr Ruth Crabtree, Head of the Academy of Sport and Physical Activity at Sheffield Hallam, said: “This partnership is perfect for students who want to improve their football skills and competences whilst obtaining a degree with a leading applied sport and physical activity university.
“Staff at Hallam and Unipro have a wealth of expertise, experience and knowledge that provide our students with a fantastic return on investment and added value that enhances your opportunities within the global sport industry.”
