Urban Deli provides a taste of things to come for Darlington Market

Urban Deli has opened in Darlington Market, providing a snapshot of what can be expected from the major work being undertaken at the venue as part of phase three of the market’s redevelopment.

The specialist retailer will bring a new dimension to the market, focussing on quality and provenance, with the vast majority of items being sourced from within 50miles of Darlington. It will allow the town’s shoppers and visitors to ‘support local’ whilst helping reduce the carbon footprint of their food miles.

The opening acts as a precursor to the improvements that are being made as part of a major capital investment in the market, comprising phase three of plans, which are being jointly taken forward by Market Asset Management and Darlington Borough Council.

Ory Vanes, the driving force behind The Urban Deli said: “We’ve been blown away by the reception we’ve had to date. We know Darlington Market well, having already seen our other businesses SiDES’s and PP’s go from strength to strength, so opening our third premises here was a natural step. We have such great produce in this part of the world and Urban Deli will be showcasing that to locals and visitors alike.”

Michael Harvey, manager of Darlington Markets said: “What the team have done with Urban Deli has been brilliant to see. They have seen the success of their street food business grow and seized the opportunity to fill a gap in the market, bringing their trademark enthusiasm and passion for provenance.

“Urban Deli is already proving a hit, both with people who have been coming here for decades and with people who are visiting for the first time. Urban Deli represents the future of Darlington Market, a place which is welcoming of all and catering for a range of tastes.”

Cllr Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy said: “Darlington is a thriving, vibrant and successful town. For some time, we have been working hard to encourage new independent business to join our growing local economy and phase three of the market redevelopment opens-up an exciting range of opportunities for people looking to launch or relocate their business in the town.

“The indoor market brings retail, hospitality and leisure together under one roof, and is much used and enjoyed by local residents and visitors. Over recent months there’s been a number of traders showing interest in the market and we are delighted that Ory has decided to continue expanding their businesses here.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming more traders to this first-class facility between now and Spring, when works are set to be completed.”
