Developing as a leader: Key requirements for first-time managers

Managing a team can be exciting but also challenging, especially for first-time managers or those transitioning from team member to leader. Promoted managers often have the respect of their former teammates, but challenges remain.

Dominic Fitch, head of creative change at Impact, the world’s leading experiential learning company, said: “As a manager, particularly as a first-time manager or as taking over a new team, your skills and qualities will develop to be the most effective manager you can.

“By undergoing leadership development training, managers can gain new skills and build on their ability to communicate effectively, assert their position within the business and drive performance within the team and the organisation as a whole.”

Here are four key requirements for first-time managers to consider as they navigate their new leadership role.

Clarify what your responsibilities are
Understanding your role is essential for success. Establish clear responsibilities for yourself and your team to ensure efficient performance. Seek advice from other managers and take on feedback from peers and team members to grow into the role.

Communicate effectively
Effective communication is key. Listening more than you speak fosters trust and openness. Employees are more likely to share suggestions if they feel heard. When delivering important news, ensure it comes directly from you to avoid misunderstandings.

Delegate responsibility
New managers often struggle with delegation, continuing to handle day-to-day tasks. While it's tempting to help out, managers should focus on leadership responsibilities. Occasionally stepping in is fine, but doing so regularly can hinder the team’s performance.

Set boundaries
For newly promoted managers, it’s important to set boundaries. While it’s natural to want to maintain friendships with former teammates, managers must prioritise the team's performance. Building rapport is important, but maintaining professional boundaries ensures respect and effective decision-making.
