County Durham's Kromek Group secures £2 million Ministry of Defence deal

A County Durham technology firm known for apparatus used to thwart terror plots has secured a £2 million deal.

Kromek will supply nuclear radiation detection equipment to the Ministry of Defence.

The agreement will see the Sedgefield-based company deliver its handheld gamma and neutron detector to military bosses.

The firm will also supply an Alpha Beta probe attachment, which Kromek says “significantly enhances” its gamma and neutron kit’s capability, “making it one of the most versatile handheld detectors available”.

Arnab Basu, Kromek chief executive, said: “We are delighted to have won this important contract.

“The rigorous tender process reflects the confidence in the strength of our solutions, and we are proud to provide the Ministry of Defence with our latest technology.

“This contract further solidifies our contribution to the UK’s national defence efforts.”

Meanwhile, the business, based on Sedgefield's NETPark, has been selected as a supplier under the Government’s Radiological Nuclear Detection Framework.

The endeavour, founded by the Home Office, co-ordinates procurement of radiological nuclear detection equipment to bolster UK domestic nuclear security.

Kromek has been approved for three out of four framework categories, covering handheld, wearable and large-volume static radiation detectors.
