Golfers drive forward Sir Bobby Robson Foundation

Lady Elsie Robson has collected a donation to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation from the golf club close to the ex-England manager's heart.

She was guest of honour at County Durham's South Moor Golf Club to receive a £1,360 cheque, raised in aid of the cancer foundation Sir Bobby launched in 2008, which has gone on to raise more than £20 million.

Tom Wilkinson, South Moor’s 2024 captain, said meeting Lady Elsie was one of the highlights of his year.

The pair also shared a celebratory glass before Tom handed over the proceeds of the club’s annual fundraising effort.

Sir Bobby and his family played at the moorland course in Stanley, not far from where he grew up in Langley Park, and where he lived in later life with Lady Elsie after moving back to the region when he took over at Newcastle United.

Tom said: “Members were so supportive of the cause and were very generous, donating prizes and buying raffle tickets.

“A raffle for a round at the Close House Colt course was a great success.

“South Moor is a mixed club of Newcastle and Sunderland fans, and although Sir Bobby is remembered as a black and white, such is the respect for the man and the cause that everyone got fully behind it.

“I have to thank all members for their generosity.”

Lady Elsie added: “It was a great pleasure to meet Tom and everyone at South Moor Golf Club.

“Everyone was very welcoming and the club has a lovely atmosphere. It’s no wonder Bob used to enjoy playing here.

“We’re very grateful for the money Tom has helped raise, and it will help us carry on the work Bob began.”

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation funds cancer treatment and innovative patient support services that directly benefit children and adults in the North East and Cumbria, and plays a significant role in international efforts against the disease.

Managed within Newcastle Hospitals Charity, the foundation works within the NHS and in partnership with other leading charities and organisations.
