Lady Elsie accepts golf club donation

Lady Elsie Robson has collected a donation to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation from the golf club the former England manager played regularly.

She was guest of honour when she visited the South Moor Golf Club in County Durham recently to receive a cheque for £1,360 raised in aid the cancer foundation Sir Bobby launched in 2008 which has gone on to raise more than £20 million to find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer.

South Moor’s 2024 captain, Tom Wilkinson, who chose The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation as the former England and Newcastle United boss was much-loved in the local area, said meeting Lady Elsie was one of the highlights of his year. The pair also shared a celebratory glass before Tom handed over the proceeds of the club’s annual fundraising effort.

Sir Bobby and his family played at the moorland course in Stanley, not far from where grew up in Langley Park, and where he lived in later life with Lady Elsie after moving back to the region when he took over at Newcastle United.

Tom said: “Members were so supportive of the cause and were very generous, donating prizes and buying raffle tickets.

“A raffle for a round at the prestigious Close House Colt course was a great success.

“There was fantastic ‘buy-in’ as people were well aware of the vital work that Sir Bobby’s foundation does in funding research and care right here in the North East.

“South Moor is a mixed club of Newcastle and Sunderland fans, and although Sir Bobby is remembered as a black and white, such is the respect for the man and the cause, that everyone got fully behind it.

“I have to thank all the members for their generosity.”

Lady Elsie said: “It was a great pleasure to meet Tom and everyone at South Moor Golf Club.

“Everyone was very welcoming and the club has a lovely atmosphere. It’s no wonder Bob used to enjoy playing here.

“We’re very grateful for the money Tom has helped raise during his year as Captain and it will help us carry on the work Bob began when he launched his Foundation.”

Sir Bobby Robson Foundation in 2008 funds cutting-edge cancer treatment and innovative patient support services that directly benefit patients, both children and adults, in the North East and Cumbria and play a significant role in international efforts against the disease.

Managed within Newcastle Hospitals Charity, the Foundation works within the NHS and in partnership with other leading charities and organisations. Sir Bobby described it as his “last and greatest team.”
