Airport groundsman bids farewell to 3:30am starts

An ‘invaluable’ groundsman is retiring after nearly 25 years of service, ending his early-morning shifts that kept Teesside International Airport ‘safe and well-tended’.

Graham Lowes, a multi-skilled operative, has been essential in ensuring the upkeep and safety of the airport grounds, handling everything from grass-cutting to general maintenance. 

He said: “I have loved doing this job. There’s nothing better than being outside on a summer’s day. I first worked as a farmer before this so have always loved being outdoors.

“I have seen a lot of change at the airport and it has been great to see all the positive things that have happened in the last few years. I will miss the people most of all as I have worked with lots of staff over the years and they are a great team.”

Starting his daily shifts at 3:30 a.m. to avoid disrupting airport operations, the 66-year-old from Darlington has worked at the airport since 2001, even taking on baggage handling duties at times. 

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen added: “Graham has shown incredible dedication to Teesside Airport and I would like to thank him for the years of hard work he has put in to ensure this airport is a success – it is hugely appreciated.

“The early starts and countless hours spent keeping the grounds safe and well-tended have been invaluable to the airport operations.”

Graham is now looking forward to enjoying retirement with his family, including his six grandchildren and two dogs.

Ian Wrench, airfield operations manager, added: “Graham has been an integral part of the airport team. His work ethic and commitment to Teesside Airport have been outstanding – nothing is ever too much trouble and he will be hugely missed.”
