Port of Tyne unveils £7.5 million agricultural hub
A major investment has strengthened agricultural supply capabilities across the North of England, the Borders and Southern Scotland.
The Port of Tyne, in partnership with Royston-headquartered Origin Soil Nutrition, has launched a £7.5 million facility that includes a 6,000m² warehouse and a state-of-the-art blending plant, ensuring the consistent supply of over 100,000 tonnes of prescription fertiliser annually.
Bosses say the new hub will “meet the growing demand” from local farmers by “providing the necessary capacity” and improving distribution efficiency.
Michael Pater, managing director at Origin Soil Nutrition, said: “The new facility at the Port of Tyne, with direct access to deep-sea vessels, is key to expanding our ability to source raw materials globally, offering better product availability and competitive pricing.
“The Port’s prime location enables us to efficiently provide prescription fertiliser to farmers across the North East and Southern Scotland, supporting sustainable farming by ensuring the right fertiliser is available when and where it’s needed.”
The facility also marks a significant step in the Port’s strategy to support the local economy by attracting businesses essential to the region’s growth and prosperity.
Ashley Nicholson MBE, chief business officer at the Port of Tyne, added: “The presence of a business like Origin and its facility at the Port not only strengthens the agricultural sector but enhances the region’s prominence as a key player in essential supply chains.
“This partnership underscores the Port’s commitment to regional business growth and supporting sectors that have a direct impact on the local economy and job creation.
“Welcoming the new facility will also bring decarbonisation benefits as it will cut road miles for up to 5,000 lorry loads annually.”
