World-class ballet comes to Newcastle

A celebrated production is set to captivate North East audiences this December, bringing classical artistry and inclusive outreach to the heart of Newcastle.

Dance City will host Ballet Cymru’s Romeo a Juliet, offering a stunning interpretation of Shakespeare’s iconic love story. Set to Prokofiev’s timeless score, the production combines classical and contemporary elements, featuring intricate choreography and stunning costumes.

Thanks to support from the Gillian Dickinson Trust, over 1,000 free tickets will be distributed to children, older adults and marginalised groups, ensuring widespread access to this cultural event. Subsidised seats have been allocated to communities with limited arts opportunities, including individuals with disabilities, refugees and those managing long-term health conditions.

This performance marks the start of a five-year partnership between Ballet Cymru and Dance City. The collaboration will bring annual performances and workshops to the region, “enriching the cultural life” of the North East and “offering people the opportunity to reconnect with a creative, expressive part of life”.

Anand Bhatt, artistic director and chief executive officer of Dance City, said: “We’re excited to bring ballet to Dance City this Christmas, with the hope that it will become a cherished tradition for years to come.

“This production offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience ballet up close, in an atmosphere that is both welcoming and intensely powerful.

“Thanks to funding from the Gillian Dickinson Trust, we’re able to offer a proportion of subsidised seats for children and young, breaking down barriers that might otherwise prevent people from enjoying a live performance of this scale.

“Ballet Cymru also received support from Arts Council England to extend the initiative even further to include older people and other marginalised groups; and in February a workshop series.”

The production will run from December 5 to 7, promising an intimate and unforgettable theatrical experience, with choreography by Darius James OBE and Amy Doughty, and costumes by Georg Meyer-Wiel.
