Norwegian Airlines lands at Newcastle Airport

A leading low-cost airline is introducing a new direct route from Newcastle, offering travellers exciting opportunities to explore one of Europe’s most iconic capitals.

Norwegian Airlines will launch twice-weekly flights to Copenhagen from Newcastle International Airport, starting May 2.

Operating on Mondays and Fridays, the service will be the only direct route to the Danish capital from the North East and Yorkshire regions, catering to both weekend getaways and longer trips.

With record high numbers of visitors travelling from the UK to Denmark in 2024, bosses are confident that the new route “will be very well received”.

Copenhagen, famed for its vibrant culture, offers visitors a host of experiences, from the scenic Nyhavn waterfront and work-famous Tivoli Gardens to the Little Mermaid statue.

Chris Ion, aviation development manager at Newcastle Airport, said: "We’re thrilled that Norwegian Airlines has chosen to invest in Newcastle Airport.

“This new low-cost route to Copenhagen provides brilliant opportunities for leisure, business and trade between the North East of England and Denmark.

“Our customer feedback shows that Copenhagen is a popular destination for the North East travelling public and we look forward to the new route taking off next summer.”

Magnus Thome Maursund, commercial director at Norwegian Airlines, added: “We are beyond pleased to offer this direct and unserved route between Copenhagen and Newcastle connecting the Nordic region with this exiting destination and the wonders of North East England.

“This contributes to increased connectivity and benefits business and tourism in both regions.

We are confident that this route will be very well received among our customers.”

The announcement builds on Newcastle Airport’s multiple recent accolades, including being named Best in the World at the 2024 Routes World Conference in Bahrain and voted UK and Ireland Airport of the Year at the 2024 Travel Industry Awards. Norwegian Airlines’ arrival marks another step in the airport’s ongoing growth, further cementing its position as a vital hub for the region.
