Plans to develop 55 affordable homes in the County Durham village of Moorside have been approved, paving the way for a sustainable housing scheme.
Adderstone Living, the affordable house builder behind the project, received approval from Durham County Council for the 3.78-hectare site at Todd Hill Farm, situated between Consett and Castleside.
Developed for social housing provider Castles & Coasts Housing Association, the scheme will offer a mix of two and three-bedroom homes, including 18 bungalows, tailored to meet local housing needs.
Designed to reflect the area’s character, the development includes on-site open space, upgraded public pathways and a pedestrian crossing to enhance connectivity.
The proposals also include ecological enhancements and an offsite contribution to a biodiversity net gain, with an extensive landscape buffer along the southern boundary to provide open space and help screen the development, especially from the Grade II-listed Hownsgill Viaduct.
Stephen McCoy, managing director of Adderstone Living, said: “We’re committed to tackling the housing crisis by working with social housing providers to deliver high quality affordable new homes across North East England and Yorkshire.
“This is great news for people keen to get on the housing ladder. We look forward to bringing this much needed scheme, with its mix of property types and sizes to provide options for residents at varying stages of life, to fruition.
“Indeed, the delivery of social housing has never been more important than at present with commercial pressures on the sector to deliver high quality, added value schemes in places where people want to live and build communities.”
Construction is expected to begin in 2025.
