Mace secures 'global weather hub' contract
A construction and consultancy firm has a sunny outlook after securing work to deliver a global climate study hub.
Mace has been named main contractor to create new headquarters for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
Bosses say building work will start in the coming weeks, with construction expected to be completed by early 2027.
Based on the University of Reading’s Whiteknights campus, they say it will operate as “a global hub for weather and climate research”, accommodating up to 300 scientists and staff working on weather prediction systems, forecast production and climate change research.
The building will include workspaces and meeting rooms, a lecture theatre, council chamber and an interactive weather room, and be fitted with carbon reduction apparatus including solar shading.
Mace was appointed by the Government Property Agency through the Crown Commercial Service framework to deliver the building alongside consultant AtkinsRealis.
Rob Lemming, Mace managing director – public sector and life sciences, construction UK – said: “This weather centre will be a global hub for scientists to advance numerical weather prediction and inform the fight against climate change.
“Our focus on sustainability and innovation for this project will help the new headquarters meet the highest environmental standards.”
Georgina Dunn, Government Property Agency interim director of capital projects, added: “The new headquarters will not only advance capabilities in weather and climate research but also bring significant benefits to the local community.
“By prioritising both embodied and operational carbon reductions, this project exemplifies our commitment to both sustainable development and scientific innovation.”
