‘Landmark’ £200 million Gresham plans submitted

A £200 million regeneration project in central Middlesbrough has reached a “significant milestone” with the submission of a planning application.

Developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property, working with Middlesbrough Development Corporation, plan to transform a derelict site in Gresham with more than 230 build-to-rent properties, student accommodation for more than 400 people and a new hotel.

Officials say the “transformative” development would “see the biggest one-off investment in Middlesbrough in living memory”.

The planning application follows an extensive consultation process to gather the views of local residents, businesses and community groups.

Neil McMillan, iMpeC director, said: "The submission of our planning application marks a significant milestone for the Gresham project, reflecting months of engagement with local residents, businesses and key stakeholders.

“Our vision remains focused on delivering high-quality housing and accommodation, comparable to the best in other towns and cities, with the goal of attracting and retaining talented individuals to Middlesbrough. 

“The Gresham project has the potential to play a transformative role in shaping Middlesbrough’s future success."

Fairfield by Marriott are in talks to open a 200-bedroom hotel on Borough Road, while Wates has been appointed as lead construction contractor. 

Middlesbrough Development Corporation has also approved an additional £7 million funding package to support the project.
