'Exciting milestone' in law firm ownership switch

A law firm says it is primed for future growth after undergoing a leadership change.

Williamsons Solicitors has shifted to an employee-ownership trust model.

Bosses at the firm, which has offices in Hull, Driffield and Bridlington, say the move will give “every employee a stake in its financial success”.

Under the terms of the deal, 100 per cent of shares in the company have transferred to solicitors Sarah Clubley and Jane Cousins.

The duo will continue their roles on a board of six directors, with four trustees in place to help oversee the future of the business, which was founded in 1890.

Sarah, who joined Williamsons more than two decades ago, said: “This will build on our unique and collaborative culture, while shielding us from acquisition or a management buyout, which would place power in the hands of a few.

“All staff will have the opportunity to become more involved in decisions, but it will feel like business as usual.”

Jane added: “Becoming a 100 per cent employee-owned law firm marks an exciting milestone, and it is a very proud moment for me personally too.

“The new structure allows us to give every employee a stake in our financial success.

“It will empower people, attract top talent and ensure we maintain our culture and ethos.”

The deal was supported by Nigel Beckwith, of Gosschalks Solicitors, and Mike Beckett, of Forrester Boyd.
