Northumberland’s food scene gets fresh start
An initiative is set to boost a county’s food and drink sector.
Northumberland County Council, alongside Food and Drink North East and Northumberland Small Business Service, is leading a revamp of the Produced in Northumberland scheme, which verifies and showcases local food and drink.
Following feedback from producers, hospitality operators and tourism businesses via surveys and two roundtable events held at Ad Gefrin and Brocksbushes Farm, officials say the project, which is targeting a relaunch this spring, will aim to “elevate” Northumberland’s reputation as a premier food and drink destination and foster a “shared identity” and “communal sense of collaboration”.
They add the refreshed programme will highlight quality, provenance and sustainability, while offering businesses marketing support, increased visibility and accreditation benefits through the Produced in Northumberland badge.
Ian Pilkington, Food and Drink North East's commercial director, said: “We are happy to be leading this project in collaboration with Northumberland County Council and Northumberland Small Business Service.
“Moving forward with practical changes to integrate the food, drink, hospitality and tourism sectors is key.
“The recommendations will be released soon, and we want to seize this opportunity to create lasting impact."
Councillor Richard Wearmouth, deputy leader and cabinet member for supporting business and opportunities at Northumberland County Council, added: “These events are key for the collaboration and how the council, businesses and residents of Northumberland can work together to showcase all the fantastic Northumbrian food, drink and hospitality.”
