Newcastle pub partners with Marka for green shift

A Newcastle pub has partnered with the UK’s first sustainability accreditation for the sector.

The Free Trade Inn, on St Lawrence Road, Ouseburn, has teamed up with Newcastle-based Marka to enhance its environmental practices and “embed sustainability” into its day-to-day operations.

As part of the collaboration, the pub will undergo a review using Marka’s sustainability framework, focusing on areas such as environmental impact, social responsibility and business practices, as it aims to secure the Marka accreditation.

Mick Potts, manager at The Free Trade Inn, said: “We’re proud to be working with Marka to strengthen our sustainability efforts.

“As a long-standing venue in Newcastle, we recognise the importance of adopting responsible practices that benefit both our community and the environment.

“Marka’s expertise provides us with the tools to make meaningful changes while maintaining the atmosphere and quality our customers love.”

Rob Bowey, director at Marka, which recently announced a similar partnership with Newcastle-based train operator Lumo, added: “Marka’s goal is to help venues like The Free Trade Inn embed sustainability into their day-to-day operations without compromising their unique character.

“It’s fantastic to see such a well-loved venue taking active steps to reduce its environmental impact, and we’re excited to support them on this journey."
