Specialist homes set to welcome residents
A new development in South Tyneside is offering supported housing options for residents with learning disabilities, autism and complex care needs.
The first residents are set to move into ten new bungalows in Hebburn, part of a wider partnership between Karbon Homes and South Tyneside Council.
Based on Hedgeley Road at the site of the former Father James Walsh Day Centre, the two-bedroom bungalows will help address the shortage of specialist housing in the area, with plans for a second development underway in Jarrow.
The homes will offer 24/7 on-site care and are part of the council’s wider Adult Social Care Accommodation Strategy to support independent living.
Councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “This is a fantastic scheme and we are really proud to have delivered it in partnership with Karbon.
“The development will provide adults with care needs with the independence of their own home, with their own tenancy agreement, but with the security of knowing they have round-the-clock on-site support should they need it.”
The delivery of the two schemes in Hebburn and Jarrow is part of Karbon Homes’ partnership with Homes England, which is providing £165 million to deliver 2200 new affordable homes across the North East and Yorkshire, ten per cent of which has been dedicated to the development of new homes for people requiring additional support needs.
Sarah Robson, executive director of development and regeneration at Karbon Homes, added: “It’s fantastic to see these new bungalows finished, a scheme that provides more than just ‘bricks and mortar’ homes, but a safe, supported community where adults from the borough with learning disabilities, autism and complex care needs, can thrive.
“This project with South Tyneside Council is a great example of what can be achieved through collaborative working.”
